The compartment was relatively
comfortable and at the end of the corridor was a water boiler
providing hot water for tea, coffee and Pot Noodles... |

After the excitement of passing the
Great Wall the countryside flattened out and we were passing
through mainly agricultural countryside with the occasional town. |
The train stopped every now and then
allowing you to get off and stretch your legs and buy the odd
beer. |

Our compartment became very popular all
of a sudden when it was discovered that we had cornered the market
in COLD beer. Mark is pretending to read "The Last Disco in
Outer Mongolia". |
Alistair taking a cooling drink.......The train rumbles on through
the Chinese countryside and darkness falls. We were due at the
border at around midnight.

The railway line gauge is different in Mongolia so in what looks
like a very difficult answer to a simply problem the whole train is
jacked up.....

And the bogeys are changed.......
|

|
We traveled on through the night passing through the Gobi Desert. As
it was dark you couldn't see much but as if to compensate most of
the desert tried to get into the compartment. All windows closed, we
settled down for an uncomfortable nights sleep (for some of us at
least)
